Connect your Shopify store to Claude

Give Claude read and write access to your catalog, orders, and inventory so it can actually help, not just chat.

Claude is only as useful as what it can see. Ask it about your best-selling SKU without a connection to your store and it will guess, or ask you to paste data in by hand. Connect Shopify once and that guessing stops. Claude can pull your live catalog, check real inventory counts, look up an order by number, and, if you allow it, update a listing or adjust stock, all inside the same conversation where you're already working.

This is done through MCP, the Model Context Protocol. It's the open standard Claude uses to talk to outside tools and services. Shopify publishes an MCP server for exactly this: your store's data, exposed through a set of tools Claude can call. You're not giving Claude your password. You're authorizing a connection the same way you'd approve any third-party app inside Shopify, and you can revoke it any time from your Shopify admin.

What Claude can actually do is bounded by the scopes you approve during that authorization, not by what it decides to try. If you only grant read access to products and orders, that's all it has, no matter how the conversation goes. If you later add write access for inventory, you can just as easily remove it. Nothing about the connection is permanent or hidden, it shows up in your Shopify admin's app list like any other integration you've installed.

What changes once it's connected

Connect it

  • Open Claude and go to Settings, then Connectors. In Claude Code this lives in your MCP configuration instead.
  • Search the connector directory for Shopify. Shopify publishes an official MCP connector, so you're linking the real thing, not a third-party bridge.
  • Click connect. You'll be sent to Shopify to log into the admin of the store you want to link.
  • Shopify will show you the scopes the connector is asking for: products, orders, inventory, customers. Read the list. Approve only what you actually want Claude touching.
  • Once you approve, you're back in Claude and the connector shows as active. No code, no API keys to copy.
Test it with a low-stakes question first.

'List my 5 lowest-inventory products right now.'

If Claude comes back with real SKU names and numbers instead of a disclaimer about not having access, the connection is live.

What to ask once it's live

  • Which products haven't sold in 30 days?
  • Pull order #1042 and tell me what's in it.
  • Draft a better title and description for [SKU] and show me before you push it.
  • Compare this week's revenue by collection.
  • Flag any product where inventory dropped by more than half this week.
Read access is safe to hand over freely. Write access, editing listings, changing prices, adjusting inventory, is where you want a habit, not blind trust. Have Claude show you the change before it pushes it, every time, until you've watched it get a dozen changes right in a row.

A realistic first week

  • Day one: read only. Ask questions, don't approve any write action yet. Get a feel for what Claude actually sees and how current it is.
  • Day two or three: pick one low-risk product and let Claude draft a description update. Review it line by line, then approve the push yourself.
  • By the end of the week: you know where you're comfortable letting Claude act without a review step, and where you're not. That line is different for every store, and it's yours to set.
Where eComrads fitsOnce Claude can see your catalog, it can also act on it. Connect the eComrads MCP alongside Shopify at https://mcp.ecomrads.com/mcp and you can go straight from 'which product needs a refresh' to a finished ad for that exact SKU, using the real product photo already sitting in your store, without downloading anything or switching tools.

If it's not working

  • Connector shows connected but Claude says it can't see products: disconnect and reconnect. Permissions sometimes need re-approval after a Shopify plan change.
  • You manage more than one store: Claude will ask which one you mean if the connector is scoped to a single store, so name the store in your prompt.
  • Nothing shows up in the connector directory: confirm your Claude plan includes connectors and that you're on the latest version. New connectors get added over time, so a refresh often surfaces it.
  • Orders look right but inventory looks stale: ask Claude to re-pull the data rather than trust a cached answer from earlier in the conversation.

Connecting Shopify takes about ten minutes and it's the single highest-leverage setup step for running your store through Claude. Everything else, ad creative, customer replies, reporting, gets sharper once Claude is looking at your real data instead of what you remembered to tell it. Do this one first, before Meta Ads, before any creative tool, because most of the other guides in this hub assume Claude already knows your catalog.
